Caption | Stock Press Photo | The Suomenlinna Sea Fortress Suomenlinna (Finnish: „Finnish Fortress”; Swedish: Sveaborg - „Swedish Fortress”) - a fortress in Helsinki, located on a group of six islands near the shore. Formerly, it was tasked with defending Helsinki from the sea. Currently, it has lost its military value, but it has great cultural significance as a historical monument and tourist attraction. In 1991, it was entered on the UNESCO World Heritage List. These islands have about 800 inhabitants. There is also a military museum on them (one of the exhibits is „Vesikko” - a submarine from the Second World War), a naval military school and many restaurants and cafes for tourists. |
