Caption Stock Press Photo |Helsinki Archipelago Cruise In the summer, thousands of people gather to swim, sunbathe, hike and camp on those islands that are connected by route from the mainland. These islands often have at least a kiosk, possibly a cafe, and some even have a restaurant. On the other side are the outdoor islands, which have the basic services needed by hikers, e.g. a kitchen shelter and a camping area. Some of the islands do not have any services and you can hike on them with the right of every man. The most barren islets in the outer archipelago can be the best birding and fishing areas. Fishing as a means of livelihood has almost disappeared from the Helsinki archipelago. There are a dozen people who fish as a profession. They mainly catch salmon and trout with fishing nets and zander, whitefish and perch with nets. So far, not much actual tourism has been directed to the archipelago. A tourist can go on a sea cruise or fishing trip for a few hours, but for example there are very few accommodation facilities. The situation will certainly change in the next few years, because the archipelago belonging to the capital is a real rarity, and it will certainly interest tourists from far away. hel.fi
