Galärvarvet - an old naval shipyard in the middle of Stockholm.
In the year 1722 his Majesty the king Fredrik I decided that his fleet of galleys needed a place where they could be hauled up on land to be maintained and stored. And thus the name Galärvarvet, or the galley shipyard, was born. In the beginning the galleys were stored in simple wooden sheds. But because of the firehazard it didn't take long before plans for structures in stone were made. It would take 30 years before those plans would come to fruition and an additional 5 years before all 30 sheds were replaces with equivalent buildings in stone. The placement of the sheds were divided in to blocks, named North Arsenal and South Arsenal.
