The Tall Ships' Races 2009
During the first days of July 2009, Gdynia became the world’s sailing center. The most beautiful ships that float in the oceans gathered there. The event, The Tall Ships Race, took place in Gdansk Bay for the fourth time. The first occurred in 1974, the second in 1992 and the third in 2003. This year, Gdynia greeted 105 majestic sailing ships from 17 different countries. The oldest was an astonishing 112 years old. The guest of honor was our Dar Pomorza, which is celebrating its 100 sailing anniversary. This gathering of ships is not only a beautiful sight but also a sport and test of speed. On July 5th, all of the ships started from four ports. The first stage of the race ended at the Russian port in St. Petersburg. After four days the entire fleet arrived at the former capital of Finland. During this stage, the ships did not rush and strain but sailed at a calm pace together. The goal of this stage was to build comradery and understanding. During this race the different nations support each other. However, the final stage of the race was a true race to the finish in Klaipeda, Lithuania, where the much anticipated final of this year’s Tall Ships Race occurred.
